I'll be doing a new Independent Road podcast soon explaining my recent life/ work/ career developments... the biggest of which is that I'm going on a hiatus.

In short what's most important to me is that I move forward and I've got way too much on my plate so for the remainder of this year, also going into next year I'll be finishing off all commissions, ink work, writing, and miscellaneous work I have right now....commissions are closed until I do as well as any new work.

I have a new day job (I'm in training right now) plus I'll be moving in a few months, and wish to enjoy end of year holidays (been years since I took time off for them, mostly worked thru them in recent past)

Lots to do, as well as a well earned time off....details soon!

I've wanted to bring a certain focus to my blog, at least in part. I thought for some time in different ways on how to approach it and I came up with the idea of doing an ongoing column....Brilliant! (or so I hope it will be, or can) A number of people have always asked me to write a book about being in the industry, my experiences and thoughts....well, this can be a start to giving those shape. I want your thoughts as well, feel free to add your comments and musings along with mine.

We'll see where it takes us.

There have been a number of changes in this industry since I started reading comics, but a huge boom of movement in just the last 10 years or so. With a heavy growth in social media, advances in digital devices, Hollywood taking more then just an interest in comic properties, acceptance in everyday life of comic readers, even more people writing and drawing their own comics (mostly web comics)... but also the plain truth that less people are making a living producing them.

So much change, not all of it for the positive.

I don't want this column to be about the negative, but more about bringing strength to us creators as well as to this industry. We have an opportunity to band together, help each other, to build on what is here.

Art & storytelling (the one/ two combo that make up comics) are entertainment, but its also the heart and soul of us. These stories are everything to us. They're about overcoming the neighborhood bully, about what is right, about Love... just about anything. They make us cheer on the characters, make us laugh, cry, give us hope.

Much like novels, or movies I believe comics are an essential part of our lives.

There have been a lot of change within the industry, hardship, struggle and even loss but it can and will turn around if we want it to.

How you ask? ...I have my thoughts.

...and I'll bring them right here, I hope you'll add yours too!

New Spartans - a change!

After posting up a Kickstarter page and making a Event page up on Facebook we got lots of friends joining but very few pledges. Jonny & myself have decided to fold both after a few conversations.

This was Jonny's comment -

"Hey all! I would like to thank everyone that has helped support us, morally , Financially and otherwise. We have made a big push with the New Spartans Project, but I myself, Shannon DeHart and the project are virtually unknown and the project has not grown as we had hoped. We have high hopes that in time we can garner some interest in the project, and bring it out ourselves in the near future. That being said, for now we have decided to close the Kickstarter project as we are only at about 3% of a 90 day kickstarter with less than a month to go. We thank each and every one of you who pledged. Even though we were unable to fund this project and utilize the monies offered, we invite you to still support us if with nothing more than with raw enthusiasm. We need folks like yourself who desire and look for fresh new material in the comic book market. Once again, thank you so very much and please stay tuned to all we do. Interview:
Hey all! I just wanted to let everyone know, that I was contacted last week by John Helmer of Red Leaf Comics and Comic Book Interviews.com. He asked if I would like to do an interview for him, and I said yes. I was excited about the chance to get to talk about getting back into the business of making comics, upcoming projects like New Spartans No.#1 and Zyklon-B in the UK. I took the opportunity to hand out a lot of thanks to the people that have helped me over the years. I also got a chance to brag on the great creators I have the good fortune to work with and call my creative team. So, if you get a chance and are interested stop by and take a look. The New Spartans

As a group of creators you will probably never find a group of more similar individuals. The idea for the New Spartans actually started back in the mid 90's with co-creator Shannon DeHart and myself talking about all our comic influences of the 70's and 80's. We felt that comics were changing, but what we had longed to see and read again were a style of story and pacing that we just didn't see that often or remembered from our past. Our love always fell back to classic style heroes and villains, super avengers and big worlds. The Super Hero genre has changed a lot over the years, we wanted to be a part of that. Reality mixed with classic good guy , bad guy figures. Big environments with bigger repercussions. I think our view of the comic world of empowered heroes will be an enjoyable one for readers. It took a few years but the creative team became complete and we hope that we will finally be able to make The New Spartans and our vision of a super heroic world come to life. So for Shannon DeHart, Peter Palmiotti and myself. We thank everyone that has ever supported and encouraged us!

C. M. is coming!

I've been busting my ass as of late and a lot of what I've been working on is really starting to come to a head....but like a lot of artists out there I am worried that I'm not totally up to task right now.

Don't get me wrong, I'm good enough for right now, I've been flexing some new artistic muscles doing a few sketch cards, working on my list of commissions and even sketching in-between real work I should be doing. But I need to grow more, now rather then later.

C.M. is my answer to that.

I plan to be getting to what I've been itching to do for a long long time, I'll be starting soon on some comic pages....but my penciling skills need work, lots! I'm good as an inker but penciling ...ahh, needs work.

So what is C.M.? When will it start? Where?

I'm not saying...not yet anyway, well okay you got me. :) I will say I've been thinking of the best way to do this, where to put it and such...its going to go up on my Tumblr http://humanartstudios.tumblr.com/
I'm sure most of you already know of Tumblr and for those that don't, not to worry. You won't have to join to see what I'm up to or what's going on...just follow the link and bookmark my page.

Point being I already have enough different things in mind to do here on my blog. And with the addition of my new studio mates Alan Abbadessa & Jonny Ledford there going to be more going on here then ever before!

Here's a sketch I did recently (another one of those 'while on the phone' ones. Its not totally what C.M. will be but it is a hint.

I thought it looked a little like Michael York from Logan's Run (such a fun fun movie, if you haven't checked it out then go do so!) Like I said, I was just doodling while chatting on the phone...I dug the way it came out and wanted to share.

Its not this that will be C.M., but more because of this.

I recently saw that Marvel was coming out with a new issue of DareDevil....a new number one....ugh, reboot my foot! $h!t!

I posted this comment on my Facebook stream...

I want to start fun new game, every time a publisher comes out with a new #1 issue, Spam them DIDN'T ISSUE 1 COME OUT ALREADY!!! #rebootsareforlosers

...maybe you get the idea I loath the idea of reboots (in most cases mind you, not all...I am looking forward to the New Aquaman series. But Aquaman needs one after all his hardships. Say amen...amen.)

In response to my post, one follower/ friend/ fan had this to say...his words!

Scott Sheaffer (it was so well thought out and right on I had to share before it got lost in FB's yesterdays backlog.)

"When I was a kid, a first issue meant something. It was the beginning. Sometimes the very beginning or sometimes just the beginning of a character getting their own series. Some characters didn't even get a first issue. Thor for instance debuted in JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #83 and the series's title was eventually changed to THE MIGHTY THOR. A first issue might be the start of a short-lived series that was interesting but which never caught on with mainstream fans - a cult classic. Or it might be the start of a long enduring series. "Wow! THE FANTASTIC FOUR #200 is coming out? Imagine having the very first issue! Being there from the start!" That was the appeal of first issues. That's all been ruined because now you get first issue after first issue. Something has lasted for 50 issues? Time to reboot. Even poor old Thor got his very own first issue. Publishers do this because first issues still create a TEMPORARY spike in sales. It's no longer just that it's a prefabricated collector's item. Now it's a jumping on point. So many comics writers have been writing so many convoluted, never-ending stories for so long that many fans won't check out a series that's been going on for a while because "there's too much backstory to catch up on" and "I won't know what's going on." From the 1930s through the early 1960s, writers managed to have multiple short stories with beginnings, middles, and ends in each issue. Then issue length stories became more common, but they still had beginnings, middles and ends all in one issue. Then, multi-issues stories with ongoing subplots became more common. Even then, some editors demanded that each issue of these story arcs be approached as if it would be some readers' first issue of that series or maybe even their very first comic ever. Even that's been lost. I started reading Conan comics in early 1978 when I was seven-years-old. I was disappointed when Marvel cancelled CONAN THE BARBARIAN and rebooted with CONAN THE ADVENTURER. I kept buying though even though the comics had long since plummeted in quality and certainly didn't hold a candle to the original Robert E. Howard prose stories. When, Conan moved from Marvel to Dark Horse, it made some sense to start with a new #1, although I would have liked to have seen the old CTB numbering revived. Heck, DC did that with Tarzan back in the early 1970s when they took over Tarzan from another publisher. They kept on with the old numbering. However, when Dark Horse cancelled their Conan series after fifty issues only to immediately restart with CONAN THE CIMMERIAN #1, I simply walked away after thirty years of buying Conan comics. The gimmick of constantly rebooting with new first issues was the straw that broke the camel's back. I haven't bought a new Conan comic since."

Practice makes better!

Practice makes better, and I know as an inker this has worked for me, now I have to start including this more if I'm ever going to be a penciler to look out for! (I can dream right!?!)

I used to venture out to various studios in Manhattan to take a few figure drawing classes. Even while just inking it was good to loosen my hand and sharpen my eye. Now as a aspiring penciler as well, its down right critical! There's plenty of great figure pictures on the web but I wanted to do quick renderings to help improve my speed as well.

I grabbed a countdown clock (also on the web) and did full figure drawings at different intervals. One minute, 5 minute, 10 minute etc.

The only really daunting thing is to keep doing it on a consistent basis... with a heavy workload and a future day job, I'll just have to find the time!

Keep drawing/ writing... I'm sure we can inspire each other!

Where I go from here.

Its been quite some time since I wrote a blog, but it being the new year, and me trying to take a bit of stock of my current workload as well as steering my path for the foreseeable future I'm back here keeping you (my friends and fans) abreast of whats to come. JOY!

I'm going to keep things simple and direct over the next few months. My main concern is to get on top of my schedule, its taken a very slippery slope as of late for many reasons, not all of which are behind me. Like for instance I'm still seeking out a day job, as well as have my hand in way too many projects....which will be trimmed down.

So, my short list -

1) Complete books already started - there's a bunch of these, and even when my job as inker is done (most of them are only ink gigs) I will step in and help in other ways to get theses books done! (think its time for a mass e-mail, time to call in the troops!)

2) Complete inks - I've got a tall stack of pages to be inked, I'm going to get threw these one at a time.

3) Writing assignments - I started some projects I pushed to the side, now is the time to work out a schedule for these.

4) Blog and podcasts will return, its been too long and I'll admit to having some very grand plans....but for now, a blog and a podcast a month at least. (more if I have time.)

That's all for now, that plenty to keep me occupied for quite some time. While my main focus is the day job...projects/ work/ career will progress at a steady pace for now with some real good stuff in store for the new year.

Moving/ Dayjob/ Hiatus

This is not what I planned on blogging about today but I'm going to keep it short. A lot of you already know times have been tight and changes have to be made. Well folks, instead of celebrating Halloween this Sunday with everyone I'll be beginning my journey to my better life.
To many questions about what and how need to be answered so I'm not going to go into any of those details but I will say this... until further notice I'll be on hiatus! I'll check my emails and messengers but my blogs and podcasts, even producing art and making posts will halt until I get back squarely on my feet! (by that I mean don't expect any.)

Other then that this past week hasn't been great, and I'll get to that in a moment but first I wish to say thanks to all my friends at Deviant Art, for those that don't know, its really a great site, an artist community (writers and photographers too!) and a big shout out to all there for the love they have been sending my way. I don't think I'd be as sane if it wasn't for a lot of those folks. I've spent some time there this past week catching up on comments (its taken me a few months to go threw them all, but worth it.) and chatting with a few friends as well as made a bunch of new ones. A ton of them congratulated me on my Haller award and have been very sympathetic towards my recent plight.

I want to mention that I've made arrangements to be at Mid-Ohio next month, I'll be at Studio 4 Hire's table (a group on D-Art, that will have its own website soon) I won't be there the whole show cause we'll be switching off but you'll catch me there. I'll also be looking for good paying inking work I'm sure, and with the past two years.. its going to be great to finally get to a con after so long!

I've decided I want to be more consistent in when I release my podcasts and blogs. Consistency has been a challenge for me as of late and I don't see it getting any easier in the near future (I'll be getting a new day job as well as moving to a new pad... details when it happens.) Unfortunately I will not be attending New York comic con this year. A couple of dozen people have already asked if I'll be there and I feel I should let everyone know of my situation. I won't be going this time around but I do hope that in the future things will turn around and I'll be able to make it out to NY as well as a bunch of other cons.

My particular challenge Is a result of the economy true but its also the fact that I'm just not making what I used to. I don't expect Marvel/ DC rates working with independents but its the ridiculously low rates that I've been charging that have put me in a worse spot. This has got to end... and frankly it may already be to late.

I thought in the last few years if I busted my ass like never before, if I was to take on more work then I did before, if I networked and podcasted... things would pick up. But its only just been the opposite. I'm growing a bigger financial hole for me to sink into and now I'm at the point where I'm no longer on top of my workload because its just become to much to handle. A day job is most definitely in my future and that's cool and all...but I still have a bunch of work to finish up for others. I'm at a lose as to how to handle things...I feel lost.

There have been a few developments, I got my website www.peterpalmiotti.com which is very cool, both my friend Alan Green and my brother Tony Palmiotti have worked to make that happen. I'm also on the my way to maxing out of friends I can add to my Facebook page, so you can now find my fan page there as well, and add yourself to it!

So, for now, I'll continue to work hard and try to right things. Struggle as I will for my foreseeable future as I do so. If you do care to help ease my woes there are a few ways in which you can help. The direct one is my donation button in the upper right of my blogspot. I've gotten a few and every little bit helps. New York Comic Con-Quest Part Three

So as things stand right now I'm inching towards my current dream of being able to get to NYC CC! I've got my pass for the con as well as a place to stay (with friends)...its only a matter of coming up with the cash to get out there. Even taking a bus out there (cheapest route) its still beyond my means at the moment. I'd also like to avoid taking a bus mostly because its a day to get there then a day to get back, time which will be lost and can be used more productively then just sitting on a bus (not getting any work done, nor resting, I'm sure if you've taken an extended bus ride you know what I mean.)

I wish I had more then just art to sell at the moment but that is mostly all I have to offer people in order to make some cash for my tickets. In the future I'll have more in the way of products but for now here's what I got...

Sketch cards - Only a small batch left. I did these originally because there seemed to be a demand for them. I number of people inquired if I did them and some even asked if I would do a commission sketch card or two for them. Workload – Week of August 30th to September 5th

My goal is to get a page a day inked as well as some writing and penciling. You see Humanists (here at Human Art Studio...that’s what I call my friends and fans!) I've been lacking in the get it done department as of late and its well past time for me to get on the ball and get with it! Sure I can give a list of reasons and excuses....but I'm not....but what I will give a bit of what I am trying to achieve here and now.

I love comics, for those of you who haven't figured that out as of yet, its been a passion of mine since 1991 when I first came onto the scene (working in the industry... not just a huge fan and reader) I walked into comics as an inker doing backgrounds, filling in blacks and honing my skills until I (the important word here is I) decided I was good enough to move up from there. I wanted to be one of the better inkers around, and I knew nothing less then me training for years would get me there. So flipping threw hundreds of comics, examining countless artists and their work, inking over tracing paper, copying hundreds of panels in different styles for the gleam of hope that I'd pick up some techniques. Talking with other artists/ inkers (not as easy back then) just engulfing myself into becoming a better inker. I'd check out any original art I could find (mostly at conventions) You get the idea.

So where does that bring me today you might ask? What am I trying to accomplish with my current workload? A lot to be sure. I'm working on a wider range of artists as an inker to constantly improve my inking skills...still. I'm also got a few pencil and writing gigs lined up. As a freelance artist in comics I'm not even making a fourth of what I used to...but I'm not giving up. I'm working harder on getting my name out there, on networking, on letting people know what I'm up to. This is something I never used to do...at all, for years. Looking back if I did more of this from the get go I'd surely be in a better spot but no time like the present they say. To sum it up, I'm overbooked in a big way, with very ambitious goals to get myself to higher ground. It takes its tole almost on a regular basis but I put my head down and focus on whats next..and move forward!!!

I know if I continue to work hard and push myself I'll crack this wall in my path and one day be able to move past my current position of living below my means. It is true, I chose this path..I could just get a day job (which maybe what's next) but I'm choosing to make my play and hope for the best.

I've got a lot on my plate, with paying gigs and creator owned projects and other work to get out it is much to handle, I'm trying each week to recalculate my schedule and how best to handle what comes my way. With only 4 months left to this year...I just know I'm make the leap I'm so wishing for!!!

Below you'll see my new plan in how I want to stick to a solid schedule. I need to stay on top of a wide variety of projects while getting some done and off my list....wish me luck..and root me on!!!

NEW YORK COMIC CON-QUEST Part Two

Its been a very busy past week. It seems no matter how much I get done or move ahead there's always something I'm falling behind on. I try not to let it get me down and chin up press onward!!!

With the pages from Assumption done (the last 5 pages of issue one, for the pitch!) next up I'm working on getting the short story for FTL done and out! I'm trying hard to be more organized about my approach in how to focus myself better. Working on 20 things at once wasn't producing good results, so my new method has me only focusing on about 5 different things (for now, I'd like to slim that done once I've got less on my plate) Besides the FTL story, I got the second half of issue 3 of Distortions Unlimited to finish off, and the first story of Dead Reckoning to do as well. Some writing on Show Devils comic in-between!!! I'm looking at what priorities I've got for next month, and just picking up the pace so I can get more done faster.

What this means for the moment as far as NYC comic con...its still about 50/50 at this point. besides paying work, right now I don't have any funds coming in. Again I'm pushing to get the first two Retro pinups done soon as well as maybe having some other goodies for sale...little by little we'll get there.

I did Paul Caggegi's The Process Diary podcast yesterday, it was really fun to chat with him and a long time coming (we talked about doing the podcast crossover back in February!) He'll be editing it and then posting it next week most likely! We'll also get to do my podcast with him as my guest next week as well...I'll post links once the podcast is up!

I'm dieing to be able to get to NYC to be at the con...maybe I'll have something more to report next week.

NEW YORK COMIC CON QUEST

So, This is what I want to happen...has to happen, just don't know how I'll pull it off yet. I have to make it out to NYCC this year, for the release party of War of the Independents, to let people know about my upcoming book Triple Treat (My one-shot tie-in into War!) as well as the list of other books in production! I'll most likely get to do signings at a few different tables while I'm there, reconnect with editors and publishers I haven't seen in many years, maybe even land some serious paying gigs as well!

Right now after much delay, I'm setting the cast of Triple Treat in stone (its up to about 50 characters now! Yikes!) After a few other books to Finnish up, Scottie Watson and I will start to tackle the art chores! (meanwhile a full script to be written and approved by all involved...of course) Much to do!

Only problem is cash. I can't really take on more work (unless it pays a worthy page rate) or do more commissions (I already have a few I still have to get to) I've tried the sketch card route (too much effort, not enough payoff) I sold a few comics here and there, and original art as well. Ask for donations (your more then welcome to contribute)...but its the same story, I no longer have time to put into doing most of these things if I wish to get on top of my workload...which is to produce comics that will take my career to the next level!

The good news is my website will be up soon, and that will help. A number of my smaller gigs will be finished soon, that will help me focus my efforts better as well. I'll have a few prints for sale soon too for my character Retro, another big help....but will I make enough in time?

This is my worry, and my challenge.

We'll see how it goes, I'll post a weekly update here (this time for sure!) to let you know if I'm getting closer or falling off the side! ;)

Jonah Hex

Hideously scarred and tougher than dirt, Jonah Hex burned a trail across the wild west as a bounty hunter and gun for hire taking on the most dangerous of contracts and leaving in his wake a trail of the dead! ..... Com' on, what's not to love!

There's plenty a treat for fans of the western genres and all things Jonah, the release of the movie, the monthly comic, a new original graphic novel, a animated short, plus a bunch of merchandising as well!

Its a damn shame about the movie, I was shocked that the take was so dismal over last weekend. Maybe a fact was that it didn't stay true to the character roots, maybe not. I did think it was a good cast and thought I'd run out to see it, but workload speaks otherwise, plus I've got a show next weekend, so nose to the grindstone! I do hope to see it one day. Like most films now, 4 or 6 months after its release! God bless streaming video!

With the Hex comic, Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray have been creating brand new Hex mythos and turning tales for 56 issue now, no easy feat! Most issues have been one and done, a small comic movie each issue! Blair Butler of Fresh Ink fame has raved about this book over and over again. Its not a top seller for DC comics, but it is a fan favorite. The joy of the book other then the great tales of blood and guts is the incredible artwork. Almost a new artist with each book! I highly recommend giving it a read. (so not just saying that because of...you know.)

Besides the 8 trade collections so far, DC Comics releases a brand new Jonah Hex graphic novel, written by Jimmy and Justin and illustrated by the comic book veteran Tony Dezuniga, if you don't know of Tony's work then you'll be in for a real treat!

And say for instance you've never read an issue of Hex before, , well as a matter of fact, DC digital now has the first 6 issues of Jonah Hex for free download, which is a good helping of Hex to warm up on!

The release of a new Batman animated DVD titled Batman under the Red Hood also marks the first animated Jonah as well as a back up! Word is that it's a story based on one from the comic.

There are also statues and posters tied into the movie / comic as well as other goodies!

So, get your Hex on....plenty for everyone to enjoy, now go get your fill of that mean old bastard!

Back in 1996 when Billy Tucci had his own comic company up and running I worked on a book called Demon Gun With Gary Cohen and Barry Orkin.
DEMON GUN is a graphic novel in three parts which tells a chilling old west story of vengeance. Preacher Howe is on a quest for bloody six shooting supernatural revenge in this exciting dark horror set in the American west.

30 Days of Hell - Day 30 - At last!!!

Today I wanted to just mention what added up to getting me into where I was 30 days ago. (well, the ball started rolling before that.) I was in a state of overwhelm, I was overworked, underpaid and without focus. To put it bluntly I was not very effective.

For me as an artist I find it hard to just focus on one thing (the growing trend) I've done this in the past and it lead down a road of burnout to a degree....the same thing day in and day out without much change was not fulfilling, so I learned to expand my horizons. I've been in the process of adding writing and penciling to my arsenal. The difficulties started with my trying to bring in an income while doing so. A large part of my troubles was the fact that I laid out my schedule so that I had a steady wave of paying work coming in, but the problem with that was that it heavy relied on others working to my schedule....not going to happen!

So because I was at that point really skirting the edge as far as barely making enough income as it was, it really became an unfun time for me. I started being bombarded by too many folks both from my work as well as bills collectors. Don't try this at home kids!

Work stopped. This is going back a little ways but when I was doing my podcast Independent Road I was doing too much at once and slowed down on my paying gigs. It cost me to the point where I had to give up certain needs in my life. I had to do without, and that made more work for myself because I still needed to communicate with those I was working for...long story short, It wasn't going to get better without some hard work...hence 30 Days of Hell!!!

So here we are at the end of my pushing myself to get things back on track, and they are better if not perfect...so I'll continue to work hard and push.

One thing I do know for sure is that I'm clearer on where I'm taking things, and where I'm going.

30 Days of Hell - Day 27 !!!

And my little theme blog continues. (so much for doing this every day...at least I posted more often!)

Been busy working and getting organized, spent a good amount of time to retool my studio, a bit of demolition and reconstruction never hurts. I am not a slob, not even close, but as far as my studio goes when I'm looking for anything on paper (still where most of my notes are, mostly due to having to wipe my laptop a few times in the last 6 months, but better now thanks!) So stacks of papers spread out across my floor doesn't make easy access. One has to understand, I'm working within a minimum of items. I have only enough to do my craft and not much more. So, I made an extreme purchase when I ran out and got a big file folder! LOL! So now the paper chase is at an end.

I began a mini podcast of sorts up on Audioboo, its an interesting site I happened on recently and the thought of posting there compelled me. Its a bit of an experiment right now (much like anything else new that I try out) but I'll be bringing more focus to it as I go.

Another site I also found awhile ago is Blip, its a site where you post songs you like. I'm not a music major, but will post a number of songs I grew up on, as well as ones I enjoy now!

Good news in regards to Independent Road, I figured out how to do the show using Skype, so now its just a matter of when I have time to do the next one!!! It will be sometime over the course of this week!

As if I don't have enough on my plate, I'll be posting new art on my Deviant art page..then posting it up on Ebay for sale....as always, my studio is in need of an upgrade!

30 Days of Hell - Day 15

Well, here we are at the half way point of 30 days...and I still feel like I'm scratching out the beginning of getting on top of my work load, but I'm dreaming big and planning big. It will take time.

For today I wanted to let you know that a mini series I worked on with my friend Joe Martino called Shadowflame is available on Amazon for purchase, I think this is the second trade Ill have my work in! Of all the time I've been in this industry and only two trades of my work...what's up with that! :) The first was for a comic called Valentine. Shadowflame will also be in November's Previews under Arcana comics. Also an update on Arena one shot, Roberts half done now with the coloring and its looking really tight, so only a matter of time now before we get this baby out. Yes! There are much more goings on right now, I've been connecting with some of my fellow creators and going over details, much in store.

I'm diving back into working on Retro The image above right now), my creator owned character, I've got a new artist on board and I'm just tweaking the first issue before I send it his way. Beside that I've got some penciling to get to and some writing,,,busy busy, yes indeed. I'm hoping some deals I got in the works come threw in two or so months, yes they're hush hush right now (sorry) but the long of the short of it, if they do..I'll be able to truly focus on more of my projects and not take on to much extra work outside of that. For now, I just plow along doing the best I can.

30 Days of Hell - Day 10

Hello all, it's been awhile (longer then I thought) I hope your past week has been as productive as mine. I'm encouraged by others and their dreams and struggles as well. To repete myself, we're in this together sink or swim. My hope is that we can help each other and build each other up.

My past week has been pretty good, still pushing and climbing that hill, still moving forward always wanting more..Its not good to be complacent.

One of the things I've gotten myself into is developing a new drawing style, new for me. I've seen the Star Wars Clone Wars 2D and 3D DVD's ….well the first of each, going to check out the others as soon as I can. I love the simplification and construction of the characters and wish to bring that to my art. After inking for years I feel I go into art thinking shadow and feathering lines not skeleton/ framework. I want to go to basics and lean more towards style and composition. I can only add to my arsenal of art techniques. One of my inspirations in this is Otis Frampton's work. Its a quicker approach and expressive in its look. Another artist with this in mind is Herberto Ramos. One thing both have in common is that they're fast, something I hope to absorb into my work. You've got to be competitive in today's market, and speed is something that's been out of reach for me, I'm better then I once was but nowhere near where I wish to be.

I wanted to plug a small bunch of web comics today. I'm old school in that I love getting my comics in paper form but I also realize the industry is changing faster then ever. With iphone's and ipad's becoming as popular as computers fans love to read there favorite comics as well as check out new ones online as well as in there more traditional form.

A comic by Steve Ogden called Moon Town is very cool, great art with fabulous colors and a terrific story to boot!

Mitz Loki's Plan B has a villain as the main character and is just wrong in a good way. Very funny ongoing story with very pleasing art.

If you like fantastic visuals and an intriguing story I highly recommend The Meek done by Alexds1 (that's what he goes by) I've been reading this one for awhile and I'm always blown away by the art and colors.

A new strip on the block called Dynagirl, for your super heroic action. It's written by Cary Kelly and drawn by Harold Edge with Lisa Moore on colors.

Last one up for today, for all you indy fas is Jacob's apartment by Joshua Kemble. You will have to go to comics, then Jacob's aprtment to check it out.

Well, that's it for now, I know I talked about some of these before here and on Independent Road but I'm thinking I'll keep plugging web comics as well as regular comics for as long as I still love comics... which should be the rest of my life!!!

30 Days of Hell - Day 6

So I've been asked “What exactly is this 30 Days of Hell?” Well, mostly its to get me back on top of my workload in hopes of maybe even pushing my career to the next level. Whats going to help is some work I have coming up in 2 or 3 months so I'm clearing out the runway so to say. For right now I don't wish to let the cat out of the bag on my next wave of projects, in part because it does involve others, but mostly I want to catch up to what I've already started the ball rolling on.

So today I did finally read a bunch of scripts on my pile and set out emails with my feedback. Nothing too heavy, I'm sure most of you know the work that goes into editing, its only the beginning really, for the moment it frees me up to focus on getting back to my flow of inks as well as planning my next few steps. Some miscellaneous paper work type duties is store this week and I'll try to connect with some other creators to go over details and have a brainstorming session or two.

There are two type of artists, those that work alone and those that work in a studio and even though I dream of maybe having a studio of my own one day I do prefer to work alone. I worked at times up at Marvel in there bullpen and while I was with Valiant back in the day I was working up in there offices. Those where my best experiences by far (but not my only ones) the thought of doing that full time, even with myself in charge just doesn't ring my bell. I'm best alone.

The reason I brought that up is because my blog is a way to stay in touch to some degree with my peers and friends in the business. I haven't as of yet streamed live from my home, I don't talk on the phone all day or even stay online all day (I don't get how others do it...and get a good amount of work done too!) So I blog or journal (on Deviant Art) or message on Twitter and Face book mostly, just to play tag with people ...to know that Hey...I'm still around, still alive, still working in the biz yo! LOL So if your not already following me here, please do! Just go hit my follow button, and when you've got a free moment in your day, come on by and give a read...perhaps I'll be gabbing about you one day! ;)

Just a short one for today...well for yesterday. In town we had nothing but rain all day and my internet was locked out so...here's day 5

Well, as I mentioned last blog, something's up with Networkedblogs. It's weird, one of the functions of NWB is that it posts a link of new blogs up on Facebook, it did....but 3 blogs at once....I'm not sure whats going on....I might just still get rid of it.

Mostly what I was up to was some reading, some inking, caught up on chores, not much to speak of.

I said it was going to be short :)

30 Days of Hell - Day 4

Hello again, thank you all for coming around, it truly means a lot to me. And let me also point out here that comments are indeed welcome....let me know what your up to as well, because we're all in this together.

So you know I'll be taking down the Networkedblogs. For some reason I believe its down now (if I'm wrong let me know) I tried to access it via Facebook and it said the page wasn't there...so not today, but soon....I'll be getting rid of it from by blog, if your on that list just scroll down and add yourself to the blog follow list!

For anyone who knows me I listen to quite a few podcast as I work. The Braincast (Steve Ogden), The Artcast (Chris Oatley)and the Process Diary (Paul Caggegi) are three that come to mind specifically when I think of my workload and how its been going as of late. My work has taken on a life of its own, I start projects, they alter direction or change form and are more often then not delayed for a number of reasons. I want to have more control of some kind over what I do but the reality's of life say otherwise. When I listen to other creators and how they go about there projects I don't feel as bad. It helps. Bottom line is I have to make a living and if that means putting more focus on inking other books then on writing my on books then that's the way its got to be. My more personal work gets pushed back... but hopefully not for to much longer.

The last few days have been helpful in getting on track, I haven't changed my world yet...it is after all a work in progress but I do feel a bit lighter as well as having my feet on the right path. I got some inking done and I've begun to start to catch up on some reading...all is going as it should.

30 Days of Hell - Day 3

Today's felt like a long day, and I guess it had been. I was catching up with emails, inking and doing some of the reading I'm sure will take me all weekend to finish off.

For today's blog I thought it might be fun to answer a couple of questions I've gotten recently.

One that was asked was “Do you allow people to make tattoo's out of your artwork” The answer is yes, If you wish to have a tattoo made out of something I did or was a part of..by all means...please do! Keep in mind, if I just inked the piece...you may wish to ask the penciler as well. And when you do get a Palmiotti inspired tattoo please take a picture and send it to me, I'll post it up here for all to see!!

I was also asked if “I'd like to become a novelist one day”. Yep, it's always been on my mind and if I have my way sometime before this year I out I want to start working on one. I'm thinking something sci-fi but wait and see, my creative mind is always at work.

Another question is “Don't you think your wasting your time working on independent comics, your good enough to work at DC and Marvel...go there!” To that I answer no, I don't think I'm wasting my time. I learn with every project I do, regardless of for whom. I'm also not actively seeking work with the majors at the moment...and their not calling me ether. But maybe down the line.

Last one up, “What keeps you going when there's nothing left?” To that I say there's plenty of times of when I feel and think that...like I don't have the energy left, like there's to many blocks in my way, life's to hard....but then I wake up one day later with fresh eyes again and keep on keeping on! It's in my blood to do this....I can't stop! :)

30 Days of Hell - Day 2

So the past few days I've been reconnecting with a few people I'm going to be working with in a much larger way. One such fellow is Cary Kelley, heck of a nice guy and 'The Man' over at Red Handed Studios! I'm doing Talon and Seppuku Blues (which have been announced) as well as two web strips of my own creation with buds Alan Abbadessa and Richard Caldwell. I'll be letting you know as soon as we're set up but for now that looks to be a ways off as I'm only starting to learn the ins and outs around building them! Lets just say...lots to do!

I've also spoke recently with Allan Angel over at Integrity comics about our multiple books that I'm at work on....seems like I'm also going to be credited as an editor there as well! My years in the biz do come in handy! :) Take a minute and check out the updated website, Allan did a fine job.

I got together with Scottie Watson as well not long ago and I'm awaiting a cover for what will be a Talon pin-up book. Details when its done.

For the most part I'll be catching up this weekend on inking and reading I have to do. I figure by the middle of next week I'll start to have a clear idea of how to balance my ink workload and then I'll begin to incorporate my writing that I'll be doing. Somehow this Will all work out in the end...and the journeys the fun part, I hope you enjoy it as well.

30 Days of Hell

For awhile I wanted to blog about where I've been and what I've been up to, well lets get started shall we! Some of you closest to me already know how close to the line I've been cutting things since I left my day job back in September, mighty close to be sure! Trying to make a living as well as follow a very ambitious path has led to many bumps in the road to be sure, so now...it's become time to break things down so I can build a better foundation before I build them back up!

My schedule has overtaken me as of late and gotten more then a little out of hand, so with good reason it was time. I have found that most of my time was taken up with trying to balance a huge workload as well as earn a living...and considering I'm earning only a % of my rate...it just doesn't do it. The shear volume of people I was working with and their individual schedules foretold the eventual result. It was just months of frustration and little in the way of finished product....and a stack of bills due.

I'm sure you can figure out the some of what I was dealing with. Most creators know the endless balance it takes to be freelance as well as keep family and friends in the picture. It won't suddenly end, but it was getting to the point of ridicules so a reevaluation of my course was demanded for me to maintain my sanity...at least what was left of it. :)

It was sad but I had to leave a few books I've done work on, no other chose, in order to make a living I have to chose work that pays over projects that I wanted to do. Before you ask which ones, just keep reading my blog for updates is the simplest way. One simply can't do everything one wishes, was time to cut some fat and make room so more personal goals....like my writing and penciling projects.

Not all has been hardship these past months, I was recently told of some interest in bring one of my creations to another medium. Anyone in this industry knows how that is though...may take years, or may never take at all....but its nice to be thought of!

Well...glad you asked!

It begins with my blogging everyday, my progress report as I go, upcoming releases and what to look out for. I've got a bunch of interesting things that I will be a part of. I'll mention the studios I'll be working closer with as well. Overall, I'll be busting my arse to get on top of my workload like I haven't in quite some time...wish me luck!!

In brief to begin, I'll leak that I do have a small bunch of web comics that I'm going to be a part of.(one by a new artist Jacob Katron) There will be a Talon pin-up book released in a few months. A few one shot comics I'll be doing with others. I'll be doing a inking tutorial column. Other exciting stuff as I go like a video of myself inking, some promo animations, and the return of my podcast...plus another podcast as well!!! Some of this will be months down the line, so keep watch here!!!

One last thing before I go today (upcoming blogs will be more to the point and shorter...but informative!) I wanted to ask for your help, as I reboot my workload as well as streamline it a bit I wanted to make more people aware of my endeavors...so I ask you to post / share / follow my blog as I go.....My goal is to bring in a certain amount of cash to not have to worry about expenses and relax for a change of pace ...perhaps even get a raise...and you can help make that happen!! My own street team!

11 x 17 Pencil: $60.00

I can also be swayed into writing something for you if your interested for a reasonable rate of $15 a page (comic page)

INDEPENDENT ROAD - FUTURE

Hello all, I have to say, last week was quite a surprise. I have to thank Javier Hernandez of Javiland for sliding me into the club of podcasting. I went over the story of how I got into listening to podcasts in my show, I will say here I was in the chat crowd of an episode of Javiland when Javier encouraged me to call in, so his next show I did. I knew I wanted to do a podcast and shortly after throwing out the idea of waiting until I had equipment of a full fledged studio, I decided to take the Talkshoe route. I set one up, called in...had no idea if it was even working, but I took the leap and plunged right in!
I can't begin to tell you the feedback, praise and cheers I got from the first attempt, it really wowed me beyond belief. I'll keep this short, not all went as planed but so far I've got 2 episodes up for listening and will shortly be doing episode 4 with Jeff Balke!

Goal Setting 2010

The future is now! Yes, that it is, just days away now. Doesn't seem that long ago that I read the book 2010 then a few years later saw the movie (book was better..of course) but 2010 is right around the corner and one gets to thinking...why is 2010 going to be any different?!?

Because I'm working on a better plan this time! (well....I hope!)

In mid 2008 for those that remember I set out from my home town of New York City for what I had hoped would be a better life! It would be cheaper (almost anything is compared to NYC) I would have my own place again (not since 1999 has that been the case) would include a drastic change of scene and I'd bite the bullet and get a day job to help me set up shop and help with some less then promising results with my comic career!

My main goals this time around are a lot grander! Career wise there are a number of books to be inked, writing a few one shots as well as a webcomic, sticking my fingers into coloring (start with flats on Tribulations) penciling a few things, also been dying to do a podcast (got the fever being a co-host on a comic radio show back in 2007) Triple Treat will see the light of day before 2010 is out, maaybe do a livestream (seems like people would love to see me do it...we'll see.) I'd love to do some teaching as well! (and as of beginning of September of this year I've been back to full time schedule!)

As for more on the home front, I defiantly need a new apt/house to live out of. Bigger space and nicer place are the key words here. I need to set up a better studio space as well, with more of what I need equipment wise.

Sketch A Day - Orange Guy

Who knew it would be so tough to do a simple drawing once a day and post it up on a blog, Gaahhh...well, I knew it would be a bit of a challenge but to tell the truth... not this much! But then again it has more to do with my schedule which is heating up!

I'm moving forward with Winterland/H-town OGN for Integrity Comics (check out some of what they have going on at http://www.integritycomics.com/ ) I just got pages for the next chapter of Terra 2920, one of the stories in Pulp Dreams! I've got some pin-ups to get to, and a series of prints I'll be doing with Martin Oatley and Jeff Balke (penciler and colorist) as well as a new webcomic I'll chat about once contracts are signed, as well as my own projects to get to, so... much!!!

I just installed a Paypal donations button here, feel free to drop a few if you wish for the continued development as well as expansion of my studio, I just got my scanner up and running so a printer, mouse, memory stick...little things that will improve my flexibility and abilities!

Some times things don't always work out as planned, such is the case with today's sketch. I made a rookie mistake, I did a loose layout and went straight to tight pencils without making sure proportions where right. Well, the purpose in doing the sketch a day is so I'm able to loosen up and get in the habit of penciling on a regular basis. I will do good ones and bad, but I'll keep to my promise/ schedule and give forth a new one everyday (for a year definitely, beyond that we'll see!) So, there really is no failing!

Well for the most part by now its fate is sealed, you see its borderline in the numbers with Diamond, but it looks like it will be squeaking by. For this I am grateful, I thank you fans, all my hard work is because of you and I am working to bring you entertaining books you will love!

It's a 3 issue story published by Blue Water Comics that takes creatures from the Distortions Unlimited company that designs and creates creatures, set designs, stage props, customs and more!

Written and penciled by Daniel Crosier with inks by Peter Palmiotti and the first issue cover by Daniel Crosier.

The story: Miners found dead in a Mine shaft prompt an investigation into the unknown, lead investigator Alyssa Montoya is haunted by visions of the ominous mine and what secrets it might hold, while set against the backdrop of a corrupt mining operation and the rising tension from protesters!

Yes folks the winner of the 2007, yes thats right the 2007 Small Press Awards is going to finally come out at the end of this month! After many long roads for everyone working on the book, the planets have aligned and wha la...Talon 0 is here!

A bunch of us have changed jobs and even moved during some dark days, but nothing would keep this book from seeing the light of day! Talon and her cast of characters will meet the world in time for Holloween! Perfect!

It was a blast to work with Scottie Watson and see it get done, his creation was good to begin with, adding to that his great artistic skills, well...just top notch, we even got David Faught to pencil a few pages as well, Ron Blair did his work way back during the contest side by side with Scottie they crafted the story you will read, Jeff Balke did his tones as the pages where inked then scanned and Cary Kelly letter it up!

Terra 2920

So the fan response to issue 5 of Pulp Dreams wasn't %100 (never is, is it) in regards to my inking of George Mcvey's pencils. Seems the people who where picking up the book liked George inking himself rather then me, that is to say...some. George and Michael even started interviewing other inkers for the gig, but I made my voice clear, and they understood, my goal is to be part of team. Not in the short term, but for the long haul. I wasn't going to ink an issue here and there, either every issue or none.
So in a few weeks or so I'll be getting the first batch of pages for Terra issue 6! Months from that issue 7 and so on. The good news for me as well as you dear readers is that I'll be on this story until it's done! In the vein of a book like Sandman or Y the last man George has told me there's an end to it, we'll see when and where when we get there, but for now, we're in it for the long run, as a team, and to bring it to you shiny new!

Tribulations and other comic works.

Hello all, another short post (hope to get more out now that I finally have internet at home! GODS!) There's a bunch of work to get to, but I just wished to mention here (if I haven't already) that my main main focus and book that Lyle Pollard and myself will work on getting out to the fans on a regular basis will be Tribulation! Over to the right is issue ones alt. cover, issue two is being completed and work on Nova City Stories (mini comic/ sister book) is going well. For this I am glad, take some time to join the forums at www.highburn.com I love to hear your comments and also wish to get people to write letters for the comic/s!!! Right now Micheal Watkins has to update his site a bit, and have issues of Trib avalable to buy, but this is an indy book and things go slow sometimes, we're dedicated to picking up the pace and getting this book out there! There will be news about this soon!!!

In other works, I've some inks for Clayton Murwin's Untold Stories book. After which I have fallen behind schedule and gotta get my pages for Jay Davis's Mark of the Jin done!

Cleaning out!

As an artist working in the independent edge of the comic industry I understand things don’t always go as planned but I always try to do the best I can to move forward. That said I only recently finished off the first book of Distortions Unlimited, and now have a stack of work in my What’s next pile! As for my inking I have the last bit of Scottie Watson’s Talon I want to finish off, a Darth Vader pin-up by Lyle Pollard to get to, some panels for Clayton Murwin’s Fallen Heroes book and random pages on 2 or 3 projects to fiddle with but mostly I’m going to focus more of my time on my own penciling!

The time is now for me to push threw a bunch of little bits of work that I’ve set aside to complete what was due first. Now with not much looming over my head (well… not a immediate deadline), I can concentrate on getting my creative drawing juices going and get down to some serious penciling. The first one up is a four page sequence for Jay Davis’s Mark of the Jinn, it’s a web comic story that’s running right now on his site One Shot Productions. I’ve loosely thumb nailed the pages out already and scribbled the first 3 onto my art pages, now it just a matter of tightening up the pencils and inking. Once done with that I have a one page project for a young sir Stephan Lapin, whom I met on Facebook for him project The Beanbag. His creation Beanbag meets with other creators characters in my case I’ll have Retro in there, it will be short and sweet and done in no time and that’s all ways a good time.

What will follow is a 8 page story called Fleshless by my friend Chris Buchner. He’s a CAG member who I met years ago and we seem to run into each other from time to time on the web, when I found out he was now writing I jumped on him! I mentioned before I’m expanding my skill set and penciling is a bit part of that, so this story will be my first big challenge. I hope I can do a half way decent job, we’ll see.

One of the other things that will top my list as far as what I will be working on is doing commissions. I only have a few but because I really need to focus more on practicing my penciling I’m going to just do a slew of 8 ½ X 11 pieces in between everything else.

Well, so that’s what’s to come and if you’ve been reading you pretty much know about the heap of books I have coming out over the next few months. I’ll be oversee progress on and adding my two cents to as they progress, on a few of them I’ll be doing a heck of a lot more production wise as well. This is really only the beginning of what’s to come so I hope you’ll stick around to see what’s coming down the pike. And please, feel free to leave comments, ask questions, advice or give me your two cents because in today’s economy it’s worth a hell of a lot more!!!

Tribulations and Summer 2009!

Hello folks. So the question I’m almost always asked is what I’m working on now. So this time around I’ll talk about Tribulations mostly, then delve into what’s on the recent horizon.

To celebrate my working on Tribulations, Lyle and I have worked up a new cover for issue one’s second printing, be sure to check into Highburn studios to purchase a copy! (click the link on the right.) Right now issue two is written, penciled, inked, lettered (thanks Kenny!) and lastly the colors are the last thing on the list to be finished. I am really excited about working on Tribulations. The story of Tribulations is focused on superhero Monument as he deals with bad guys and real life. .It has real drama and is sincere about it approach towards real people, but has a comic edge as well, which Lyle says it will lean towards a lighter view once the first arc is finished. Lyle is an up and comer writer/ artist and He’ll be making real waves in short time. Within just the second issue alone (the first with my inks) his pencils improved and tightened. He worked hard on refining his pencils knowing that I’ll be inking, something that’s new for him, for those that do not know, it’s a bit of a learning arc for a art team to gel. For me I feel it takes a couple of issues under my belt with a working on a new penciler. (someone I haven’t worked over before) With Lyle, I do feel it will be some time for it to feel like second nature for me, but I will say this, it’s a joy to ink his work. There is something about his work (maybe its his influence of JR JR’s work!) but its just the ease is the best way for me to express it. His strength is in his storytelling and it doesn’t hurt at all that he’s the hardest working guy working at Highburn, so support his book as well as his work. He loves doing commissions, message him on the site and ask for a Spidey sketch!

Not to long ago when I joined Highburn it was because a saw a bunch of fellow artists who regardless of all else there goal was to publish their work and their own creations. I decided long ago that inking by itself wasn’t the only thing I wished to do.(heck, from the very beginning inking was only going to be a stepping stone to all else) I’m like most people in this industry in that I crave to do it all. Writing, penciling, coloring, creating characters, editing and more! I’m not new to any of those, it’s just taken me awhile to incorporate it into what I regularly do professionally within comics. So now I’m doing a bunch more, and you’ll get the chance to witness this before the year is out!

So that said, let me talk about some upcoming inks! LOL! What should be up first is Pulp Dreams, Terra 2920, following that book will most likely be the book that could….Talon #0!
The SPA 2007 (small press idol) Winner is on its way finally! For those that don’t know, Dimestore is a website owned by Ian Shires who has a yearly contest for fans to vote on a number of comicbooks by non-professionals much like American Idol. (go to www.dimstoreproductions.com for info) Before the 2007 contest began I ’met’ Swat AKA Scottie Watson a year or so before then on Myspace and fell in like with his artwork (com’on, love is a very strong word) We messaged back and forth, swapped compliments and chatted on the phone for hours about fellow comic geek goodness! Well, as the story goes, I heard about the contest and egged Scottie to join SPA. .Once he did and because I felt he was doing a bang up job on his creation Talon, as well as putting together a professional presentation for each segment within the contest I decided to support him and vote his way to the top. I also got my friends involved and posted his progress on my Myspace, Comicspace and other places trying to drum up more votes for him. Well, he won and maybe I had a little to do with it, maybe not , in the end Scottie and Abrana his wife and many other friends of Scottie worked long days and long nights to get to number one! So now two years later, mostly because of Scottie needing to spend time with his family, and more recently spending lots of time opening a tattoo shop called Strangeland, its a means to make a good living for him now, so now its time for him to dive back into his comic work! We are currently finishing the last of the pages up as I speak! YES!

Deadlines, sight seen, and my own website... soon!

So this month one of my few immediate deadlines is the first issue of a book called Distortions Unlimited. This is the second project with Daniel Crosair (not counting our first work together which was the cover for Arena) the first full comic was for issue 11 of Vincent Price Presents. The issue of Price that we did was a joy to work on. At the time that I was inking it I was able to push aside most of the other projects on my plate and focus almost exclusively on it. Daniel’s pencil work had a sort of Vertigo look to it, and once I got my grove going it was a real blast. It went very smoothly. I’m very happy with the results and hope it does well. Daniel also colored the issue so I can’t wait till it comes out, which is set for a July release, Go get your copy now at Previews!
So now with Distortions here before me, I’m a bit all over the place. I have to force away my other works as they cry out for attention and just get to it. Multi tasking is a skill set I’m learning more about everyday. Daniel’s approach artistically this time is more solid blacks and white, minimum hatching witch you would thing would make my job more of a breeze… but, Daniel being the creative (genius?) guy that he is wanted to experiment with wood. (something he has done, but its my first time) So I’m inking on planks of wood (getting pages in the mail is very Heavy indeed!) Learning as I go how best to approach it. It may be the first and last time I ever ink a book on wood, so I’m having some fun!
As things look right now, I’ll be doing a bit of getting out and appearing at some conventions this season. For one day I’ll be at Clayton Murwin’s fundraiser for Untold Stories From Iraq and Afghanistan Fundraiser, I’m inking a bunch of work for this book, all of which is donated to the Troops that are there. Also I’ll be at Chicago Comic Con with the whole gang that makes up a new book I’m going to work on called Seppuku Blues! Written by R.. D. Hall and Cary Kelley, Pencils by Scottie Watson, Inks by Myself and Colors by Jeff Balke, all of us will be there! I’m really excited about this book, and for going to Chicago again.
To help start bringing awareness to my lineup of projects, I’m slowly starting to do some interviews (still new to me even though I’ve done some here and there) I did a 12 questions with Mark Mazz, Mark who just started his own new company Atlas Unleashed asked me some basics about myself, so if your interested check my projects list in my Myspace blog. Following that one I got one for Comicinfo.com and one for Jazma coming up as well. I plan to do more as time allows, got to do press and get the word out on me and my work if I hope to sell anything! Along with interviews I’m trying overall to get a more improved internet presents over all. I’m not very computer savvy but I do understand today’s comic business is run there, so I’m trying to just be around for now. I’m also trying to get my sites up to date more often. (Myspace, Facebook, Deviant art, and all else.) It is far from how I wish them to look, and to me that is the most important aspect to being professional. For now though, it will be what it is, at least until I can pay someone else to do it for me. (coming soon,my brother Tony is putting together a website for me at… www.peterpalmiotti.com !!!)
I feel clumsy in how I’m getting this done, that’s just the nature of my workload I guess, I only have so much time in any day to give to certain things. I am learning as I go, and expanding my computer knowledge each day. I just returned my blogspot and wish to get together my website up and running. I’ll keep you posted

Projects, artists, writers and keeping on top of it all!

In this blog I’ll be scraping what I’ve focused on before, now I will be talking more about all my ongoing projects as a collective. Considering that I have a big bunch of projects in front of me at this time I think it will be much more interesting.
Not to get overly lost, I’ll keep it tight this time and just mention a few of what’s on the horizon at the moment. Those will be Tribulations, Terra 2920, and Retro!
First up is Tribulations issue two is produced at Highburn studios, my inking for this book is done (I tweaked the first 7 ½ pages over Lyle Pollard’s inks and inked the rest of the book myself, I‘m very happy with the results) right now its at the coloring stage, which last time I checked in, half the flats where done and sent over to Michael Watkins for him to do his magic. Within reason the book could be colored, then lettered by Kenny Keen this month, I believe all else is done, only a back cover ad spot to fill but its looking good to me. Tribulations 2 will be out before both Talon 0 and Arena, but both of those might make it out by May, at least that’s the way it looks now. (trying to light some fire under Jeff and Scottie, though Scottie is doing pre-production on a book for Red Handed Studios with R.D.Hall right now)
Terra 2920 is half of a book called Pulp Dreams published by H.I.M., or Hamtramck Idea Men. The chapter is four, the book will be issue 5. I blame myself for this book being late, it really should have already been out, I had a avalanche of happenings in my life to deal with and , well, finally did get my inks done on it, I just spoke with George and he’s well on his way to getting Portal Prime’s chapter penciled and inked (George it seems is like me, a mass of projects and he focuses on what’s priority) So with Terra done and Portal almost there, it looks like a late April release for Pulp Dreams issue 5!
Retro, for those that don’t know is my creator owned character, he’s being produced over at Highburn (I’ll be doing a lot of books with those guys) David Fought’s half done with the pencils right now, I’ve inked Retro’s first pin-up, and started inking his first 3 pages (the pencil pages I have) this week I should have all of what David has done so far as well as a image for a banner to promote the book! Once David is done penciling the book, and I have all the pencils in front of my I’ll script the issue, I have been jotting down ideas on how to approach it, but wish to spend some time with it, this will be my first published script after all.
This past week in talks with other creators and publishers.
I spoke with Mark Torres about two things, one concerning the resurrection of The Comicbook Novice radio show and the state of The Chosen Few (the comic Mark wrote). The radio show is down right now and he wishes to bring it back, to do so takes money so it’s a question of who will possibly be paying its bills as well as what shape it will be taking because of it. I must say I had a lot of fun co-hosting it at the time, and mentioned to Mark that I would be in if it works out that way, we’ll see. I’m no longer in town so that’s a factor, but regardless I do think I’ll do something similar if not with Novice and Mark then somewhere else, I’ll keep you up to date in its developments. As to what’s happening with Chosen, I did ink issue one as well as assortment of other pages, Michele St. Martin and Brian Germain inked pages as well. The state and future of it remains in flux, right now the black and white preview of issue one is attainable through Dark Elf Designs (Brian’s comic publishing company) but Mark wishes for the book to be printed now and in color (it would look awesome in color) It’s a question of fiancé, it might still be published though Dark Elf or it might go somewhere else, we’re all eager to see this book come out, its just by who and when. I’m still down for inking more of the book (the art only gets better issue by issue, Jade Smith did a great job throughout!) So, we’ll see.
So I did get a chance to catch up with Brian Germain a little, there are a small bunch of title’s I’ll be working on with him and Dark Elf, the biggest will be Triple Treat! (I will sit down to start scripting that soon.) Mostly, Brian and I touched base on where things are at with some projects, nothing concrete just yet but progress is being made.
I asked Dave Ryan if he set himself a schedule for War of the Independents as of yet (we spoke a month or so ago, he wanted to start nailing it down.) What response I did get was that he was working on pages as he could, but nothing nailed down yet. This will be a huge book when it gets done and out there, its still just a matter of time for now.
And Lastly I spoke with Lyle Pollard about Tribulations as well as Nova City Stories. Pages are on there way to me, I’ll have Tribulations alternate cover for issue one, the cover Nova as well as a few pages of NCS to ink very soon.
I did also speak or e-mail with Daniel Crosier, Clayton Murain, Michael Watkins, Scottie Watson, David Faught, Rodney Jacobson, Randy ?, Mike Heronime, and a slew of others, but this is not a novel, I did just want to keep this blog shorter, oh well.
To wrap this up, I got a lot on my plate, my focus veers from day to day, I’m trying to make my comic work my number one priority but I do have a part time day job to help handle expenses. It’s far from sufficient. So I’m trying new ways (for me anyway) to drum up some cash. In the past while I was working for Marvel and DC I didn’t have to worry about bills so much, but working in this independent world (all books I’m working on currently are Indy) I’ve got my work cut out for me.
I got pre-orders up for the first issue of Retro. I’ll be selling my art/commissions/ original comic pages though a website soon. I’ll be doing a lot more of my own art soon, which I’ll have for sale. Prints, I’ll have a bunch, with others as well as some of my own. I will have 8 or so books out before the end of the year, with new books to promote it gives reason to do cons so I plan to do a lot of comic conventions soon. I’m seeking an intern in the area to help with my workload. I’ll have a VA soon. (virtual assistant) I have some P.R. assistance, working on expanding that. I want to start a comic club in town, I have already mentioned this to someone who has done this himself successfully and it seems to be a possibility. I would also love to open up my own art studio in town, but that will take a lot, it is something I’m considering a major consideration at this time. To have my own staff of artists as well as PR and marketing staff not only for my works but for my fellow colleagues, most of which work a day job like me.
it’s a lot, but I’m serious about stepping forward creatively as well as being a better manager of the business end of things. I moved out here to KY last year, with only what I could carry with a dream in my head and a vision. (most people move from a small town to the bigger cities, me, I’m from New York and I moved to Bardstown? Call me kooky!) I’ve been working hard to direct me and my career to bring fulfillment to this, each day is one day closer . I have a long road ahead, but I’m close to stepping things up a notch.

Here we go! Now you can order issue One of Retro! In the few months that remain before it’s release David and myself are working extra hard putting together this puppy and making it all it can be for your reading and viewing pleasure! There will now be updates, news and content added weekly. Some pics of the first 3 pages penciled will be up first, and then some sneak peeks as what the inks will look like. Also soon on the horizon will be a print as well as a shirt or two in the merchandise department.Both of us wish to take things slow and build this from the ground up, We’re committed to bring our A game to this book and really hope it will show.I take personal responsibility in making this comic into the success I know it can be! It's been some time, hello again!

*From my Facebook Retro Group, it has a bit of goings on.

Welcome, one and all! As I slowly get this group up and running to where I wish it to be, I am bombarded by all the daily tasks that need to be accomplished.
I just purchased a new laptop (my old laptop went bye bye via some nasty viruses… live and learn one hopes) the new, very miniature laptop has Windows XP home edition on it, so yeah, I’m a bit behind the times but I’ll catch up eventually. For now though I’m perfectly happy with something familiar , once I learn the ins and outs of not only this operating system but all that the internet offers I’ll upgrade then, which makes me only 8 years or so behind the times, so ;p!
As for the internet, one of the things I wished to get was a Paypal account, for a bunch of Retro merchandise I plan of offering along with the book itself. It took me only minutes to set up but about a month and a half to get conformation. This mostly stems from being able to use the internet once and awhile (at my local library but thank goodness for that at least) not having a functioning computer has put a big crimp in my being able to get lots of what is necessary done! Before the week is out though I also hope to have internet at home as well, for now I’m just using the wireless at the library which gives me a little more internet time but it’s still not the most optimum.
But enough of that jazz, from now on I plan on bringing Retro news and developments more often, as well as offering merchandise and convention schedules (I will be doing a bunch more conventions then I have, it has always been one of those things that I wanted to do, but why do a con when one doesn’t have new product? That will not be the case coming up, many new books I have worked on will be hitting the shelves staring this summer!!!)
So, a thank you goes out to my buds David Faught and Scottie Watson for helping me along the treacherous paths of all things computer and web related! Along with their help, I have at least speeded up the process of learning my way around. Nuff said!
So that’s just about it for this time around, my ongoing tribulations as I go about building a mere superhero comic book from the ground up.
I do wish to mention that I currently still have a day job (started only this year) and I’m working towards going full time with my comic work (again) once I make it past my transition phase. For those that don’t already know, I moved out here to Kentucky in part to be able to expand my scope of credits far beyond just that of just an inker as well as the opportunity of working on many projects (Retro playing an important part!) To work with so many new creators (and studios) as well as being more hands on in the production and the creative process involved in putting these funny books together has given me new excitement and joy! I truly can’t wait to wake up each morning and get to work!

Sometimes

Sometimes the forces of life weigh against you, such is my current climate. The possability of a day job looms over me, as well as the lack of crtain projects squeezing me, forceing me to reorganize my timelines. There is really much I wish to say and establish with this blog, my internet is mostly down as well, I will edit/update this as I have time for now a few points!
I'm going to try and make it out to San Diego Comic Con, not all current news is low, in fact some is super fantastic! I'm planning a big announcement there and planning on it changing a lot of the bumps that are now present!!!
I'm starting to do some commish work,...spread the word! If there is anyone who wishes to have me ink there work, I'm also up for that!
Last point,..nothing is going to stop me. That is the bottom line!

First Glance

To the left we see my first drawing of Bright Eyes, the first that I was happy with. (my women can be slightly manly.) So right there, I need to practice everyday and hone my skills if I'm to do this girl right! I remember an earlier attempt I tried with her, and even though it was published... please don't try and track it down! EEEEK! It was in an issue of Valentine. (a book by independent publisher, writer, and artist Dan Cooney. Its a good read and his art has improved vastly) I penciled what was a pin-up for the Bright Eyes add and my friend Maja inked it. Wasn't that good, my fault, and I wasn't ready then. Hopefully I learned a little more since then and can draw her sexy ass the way it should be!!! Where is my Adam Hughes art book!?!

So mostly what has been happening in studio Peter is me tripping over myself constructing this first issue tale. The story as a whole is vast so my desire is a slow start, but not to slow as to bore the reader, finding balance is the key. Much work is to be done. And speaking of work thats just what is taking priority right now. A web comic I started last year has morphed into a one shot comic. It's called Arena, it will be published through Pandemonium comics in July (for a full ish list of what I have going on, go check my myspace blog, its updated every now and then.) My friend Jeff Balke is waiting for the rest of the pages so that he can add his wonderful colors to them.(right Jeff, wonderful, right!)

TO PAPER

I realized that while beginning the process of putting whats been floating in my head for many years to paper, that the first issue has very little action or even drama. The structure of the story is very important character wise and because of this it could be a bad thing or a good one. I rethought whats crucial and what direction I wished to take it. There is much more to do even before layouts, but I'm satisfied with the skeleton so far. Day one was limited progress wise but significant.
I'd thought I would touch on two circumstances that brought upon my arriving at this particular place in my life.
The first of these would be my adolence days, growing up in Brooklyn with three older brothers was almost always highly entertaining. The quiet moments, thats what I craved (and still do) walking home from our neighborhood comicshop with a bag of 25 cent books (I wish they still where!) stretching out on my queen sized bed (I had the lap of luxury) opening up my first comic pic and taking considerable time reading the whole issue (well, some ads, but for sure Stan's Soapbox (Marvel zombie was I) as well as the letters page. Every last word. Soaked it up I tell you.) It was me and Jimmy who collected those funny books, and mostly I had what he didn't. Mostly so that I could read his after I finished mine. They where great days. And what hit it home was our Dad. Dad not only tossed us a couple of book now and then but took us to our first comic cons! It was freakin paradise. He encouraged us,... its all his fault! We love you Dad!
My other great influence into why this project is something more then alittle significant was some of the early independents! With out this becoming a book in and of itself I'll say this first...Every Single Comic I Picked Up...Ever, has made a lasting impression on me and pushed me to want to do comics, really well done comics! There, thats done. But three of the first have got to be Heavy Metal, Nexus, and Elfquest! Heavy Metal with its exotic story telling as well as its unique art styles that they had where completely different then American comicbooks. I thank Jimmy for those, I was just a punk kid then, not old enough to buy nipple books! Nexus was I believe my find, and more then likely something I first saw because of an extensive review in The Comics Journel. Nexas was kick ass heroism and clean but slightly alternative visuals. I loved it because it spoke passion. It was a creation of two artists doing it there way and I loved every single black speck on the page! And lastly was Elfquest, at this point I beleive I was picking up books that I didn't know squat about, and I was engulfed! It was a husband and wife team to pulled me into a world of there own creation. I was sold!
The list is endless, and you can easily read reviews of any book out there, this here is about the creation of my project, just wished to give you a taste of what got me here. I will from time to time tell more tails of key moments that have inspired me in this life direction!

Where it begins

Welcome all to the first ever Peter Palmiotti BLOG! Well, o.k, not really my first but the first with purpose! What I am going to attempt to do is begin, work on and complete my first finished creative work called Bright Eye's! I have been doing comics for about 16 years now but most of what I've done is inking...now I'm going to venture into new territory (not totally because I've written and I have penciled, just not professionally. That is except for a few pin-ups and such!)
What I hope to do is to show the process, my process, the sweat and tears of what I fear most....will it be good enough!?! And after years of inking and perfecting that craft, writing and penciling have a lot of catching up to do!
One of the fun things I will be doing is calling on some of my professional friends to ask for their advice as well as their influences and probably worshiping my great friend Maja who plays a key role as my muse of this character! Mostly, the story of Bright Eyes started way back when I was working on a female bad girl book, it really grew from the idea that I would and could do better if given the chance... well here is my place and time to do just that!
